What is an LED matrix? Led-si10

We often see signs like the one above in the streets or even in establishments that we go to like stores, restaurants etc. But have you ever wondered how they work? Well I guess not until you've known this subject Smile

So signs like the one above are examples of displays that use light emitting diode or LED matrix.

What is an LED matrix?

LED matrix is a collection of LEDs arranged in matrix pattern. A matrix defines a rectangular or square consisting of rows and columns. The intersection of these rows and columns are important to how we talk to the matrix and address individual LEDs.

Structure of LED Matrix

In a matrix format LEDs are arranged in rows and columns. You can also think of them as y and x coordinates. Lets assume we have 4x4 matrix. Rows would be marked from A to D and columns from 1 to 4. Now we can address each LED by row and column. Top left led would be (A,1). Bottom down led would be (D,4).

LED matrices come in two arrangements. Common-row anode (left) and common-row cathode (right).

What is an LED matrix? 4x4-110

Figure above shows the different configurations. The difference between these two configurations determine how you would call on a specific LED. With common-row anode (left), the current sources (positive voltage) are attached to rows A – D. Currents sinks (negative voltage, ground) are attached to columns 1 – 4.

Conversely, with common-row cathode (right) the current sinks (negative voltage, ground) are attached to rows A – D and currents sources (positive voltage) runs through columns 1 – 4.

Applying this knowledge, to light the top-right LED (A,4) in a common-row cathode matrix you would feed positive voltage to column 4 and connect row A to ground.

That's what an LED matrix is and how it works.

Now, what does this technique/process
for controlling many components wired together in a matrix/array called? The person who answers first will receive a thank you point.

What's inverse multiplexing and how does it differs from MUX and DEMUX?

Basically inverse multiplexing is the opposite of multiplexing. While multiplexing is the combination of multiple low-speed links into one high-speed link, inverse multiplexing is dividing one high-speed link into multiple low-speed links.

Well yes, it is possible but the LEDs might be damaged in doing so.

what if I am going to connect the matrix to push button? Where should I place the connection?

As I learned how to turn on a LED using a push button.. lol here. First, a foot of a push button should be connected to the positiv side of the breadboard. Then, the positive side of the matrix should also be connected to the other foot of the push button. Last, the negative side of the matrix should be connected to the ground. On the other hand, we are not sure which LEDs will be turned on. Lol

yes, but your LEDmatrix might be destroy or might be burn, because without resistor, the current that's flowing on your circuit will directly go on your output display Laughing

This is such a big help. My microprocessor project is somehow related to this though I don't actually use a matrix. It gives me an idea how would I work on my circuit .

The answer is POSSIBLE to drive an LED matrix without a resistor but there's a possibility that your LED may be destroyed because if you will attach a LED to a 5V power supply you will burn it instantly.
